Fact-Checking the Trump Effect — Dispatch #88 - The Truth Is the Enemy” — When Reality Itself Becomes the The Threat
February 26, 2026
THE GOOD • THE BAD • THE UGLY
THE CLAIM
*
Donald Trump has repeatedly asserted—explicitly and implicitly—that mainstream reporting, expert analysis, verified data, and even firsthand testimony cannot be trusted. Instead, he presents his own version of events as the only reliable account.
The framing is familiar:
The media lies
Experts are corrupt
Data is fake
Institutions manipulate
Only my words are real
The claim isn’t just that others are wrong.
It’s that truth itself is hostile.
**
WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED
*
Truth did not suddenly become partisan.
What changed was how power responds to verification.
Modern democracies rely on shared reference points: • Verifiable facts
• Independent journalism
• Professional expertise
• Transparent institutions
When leaders face accountability, one option is to respond with evidence.
The other is to discredit the concept of evidence altogether.
History shows that when leaders cannot win arguments on facts, they often attempt to destroy trust in facts themselves.
That’s not persuasion.
That’s epistemic sabotage.
**
THE GOOD
*
Skepticism is healthy.
• Media should be questioned
• Experts should be challenged
• Institutions should be scrutinized
• Power should never go unchecked
Democracies require critical thinking.
But skepticism is productive only when it is paired with evidence and good faith. When skepticism becomes blanket dismissal—when everything inconvenient is labeled false—it stops being critical thinking and becomes reflexive denial.
**
THE BAD
*
When truth is framed as the enemy, reality fractures.
• Citizens stop agreeing on basic facts
• Debate becomes impossible
• Accountability disappears
• Power operates unchecked
People no longer argue about solutions—they argue about whether problems even exist.
This environment doesn’t empower citizens.
It exhausts them.
And exhausted societies are easier to control.
**
THE UGLY
*
Here’s the most dangerous consequence.
If truth is always suspect, then:
• Lies become indistinguishable from facts
• Loyalty replaces accuracy
• Authority replaces verification
• Power replaces reality
Once truth loses its authority, whoever controls the loudest narrative controls perception.
At that point, democracy doesn’t fail because people choose tyranny.
It fails because they no longer know what to believe.
**
WHY THIS MATTERS
*
A democracy cannot function without shared reality.
You can survive disagreement.
You can survive polarization.
You cannot survive a collapse of truth.
When leaders convince people that facts are enemies, they aren’t liberating them from manipulation.
They are preparing them for it.
**
WHAT THIS LEADS TO
*
If protest is hatred…
If courts are corrupt…
If law is weaponized…
If truth is the enemy…
Then the final question becomes unavoidable:
What replaces truth when truth is gone?
And more importantly—
Who decides?
That answer is coming.

COMMUNITY CALL — HELP KEEP REALITY INTACT
*
If you’ve heard a Trump quote, promise, or claim that attacks facts, data, experts, journalism, or shared reality itself—send it in.
We’re now documenting what happens when truth is treated as opposition.
Dear Readers,
As billionaires consolidate and steer major media platforms — from cable news to social media giants — our ability to freely exchange ideas and tell the truth is shrinking fast. What once passed for open conversation is now filtered, monetized, and shaped to serve power, not people. That’s why supporting the Resistance and protecting truly independent journalism matters more than ever. Here on Substack, this space remains one of the last places where reporting isn’t owned, packaged, or silenced. Your support helps keep it that way.

The Ludicrous Lunatic is just that... a ludicrous lunatic.
Hey, Brother... great post as always.
It's been incredibly busy... and slow... getting settled in. But, getting there.
Hoping to return to being active daily very soon.
This is so clear in this society. I am writing a column about truth as we speak. So to you well done.
